On Thursday, April 21, 2016, the world learned of the passing of international recording artist Prince, a musical genius and cultural icon from Minneapolis, whose influence has impacted countless performers, recording artists, bands, etc. In the 1970s and into the 1980s, he helped usher in a new style of music, referred to as the “Minneapolis” sound. Prince achieved great success with the 1984 release of his multi-platinum album and academy-award winning movie “Purple Rain.” His creativity and musical talents are quite simply beyond compare. We consider Prince to be one of us–a home town boy who never left home even after he became the superstar that he is, and will always remain. In recognition of his passing, many bridges and monuments in Minnesota and beyond, were illuminated in purple. There was a light mist in the air as I photographed these illuminated Minneapolis landmarks alongside hundreds of other Prince devotees and photographers; it was as if the heavens were also in mourning as the purple rain fell around us. Nothing compares 2U, Prince.
